"The Bar"

What is the bar ?  O.o
Many people don't know but, in British English it means: "The group of people who are barristers", and in American English it means "An organization consisting of lawyers".
Here in Brazil when someone wants to become a lawyer after finishing a qualified law school, this person has to "Passar na OAB", well...In the U.S and in Britain the correct expression is "To be admitted to the bar" or "To be called to the bar".

Let me explain it better to you:

In general, a candidate must graduate from a qualified law school and pass a written test: the "bar examination". Nearly all states use the Multistate Bar Examination, usually with additions for that state's laws. The candidate is then "admitted to the bar". A lawyer whose license to practice law is revoked is said to be "disbarred".

-> In the United Kingdom, the practice of law is divided between solicitors and barristers (advocates in Scotland). It is the latter who appear in court. When a lawyer becomes a barrister, he is "called to the bar".

Got it ?   :*
